What is the receptive field and why does it matter?

Answer
The region of the input image that influences a neuron's output. Grows with depth: stacking two 3×3 convs = 5×5 receptive field with fewer parameters than one 5×5. Deeper layers "see" more of the image. Dilated convolutions expand receptive field without increasing parameters or losing resolution. Key for detecting large objects.
